   This telecourse gives the history of opera and ballet from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Included in the course are video clips of productions and special interviews of current artists.    This course explores the process of taking dance from an inspiration and vision to the refined product. Students are taught how to look for choreographic ideas, find sources for new works, and communicate with the dancers among other choreographic tools. Students have an opportunity to work with different choreographers each term.

3000  Flexibility and Strength (1)
   This course will provide an opportunity for students to practice various stretching techniques taken from exercise science, yoga and pilates. Whether the participant wishes to gain flexibility for sports, dance, or general fitness, every level of ability will be accommodated in a casual, supportive environment. Eccentric exercise, sustaining positions, and breathing will be incorporated into sessions with the goal of retaining/improving flexibility as strength.

3010  Acting for Dancers (2)
   To develop an appreciation and understanding of the art of pantomime, mime, and classical ballet mime, as they relate to the ballet stage. Students will learn about pantomime/mime through physical exercises, conventional theatrical gestures and poses, improvisations that create real images, movement and dramatic expression, and characterization through scene work. The course will also focus on the history of pantomime/mime from Ancient Greece to Marcel Marceau.

3110  The Frocks, the Trocks, and the Dancing Poodles: Conventions and Traditions of Classical Ballet (3) Fulfills Fine Arts Exploration.
   This course aims to make sense of the traditions and conventions of classical ballet by explaining the history of its development and placing it within the broader historical context of Europe's political, socioeconomic, and cultural development. Students will learn the basics of ballet's terminology, meet its eccentric stars, watch some of the jewels of classical repertoire, discover ballet's catchy tunes, learn of conventions of attending a ballet performance today, attend live performance by Utah Ballet and Ballet West, become familiar with basic structures of choreography, enjoy chatting with professional dancers, etc. The course is richly illustrated with recorded material and is equally geared towards dance enthusiasts and utter skeptics.

   Historical development of classical ballet from the Renaissance period up to contemporary theatrical dance. Changes in dance technique, production and style as they relate to political, religious, and artistic developments during specific periods. Emphasis on the two classical periods, the romantic period and the neoclassical period.

Skills of learning and adapting choreography are developed. Students will be given 3 minor creative projects and a major final project.

4745  Advanced Choreography II (3) Prerequisite: Ballet Major or Departmental permission.
   Course will consist of in-depth research into the choreographic style, structure, content, music, history, time period, national origin, and the social and political influences affecting selected works of choreographers from the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. This will be achieved through discussion, individual student presentations (2), viewing of videotapes, and creative research projects, culminating in completed choreographic works.

   This course is for senior students wishing to do their senior capstone in choreography. Students must have created at least two past works that had good response from faculty. Students will be required to have their proposal approved by the faculty and will fully produce their work, engaging in choreographing, costuming, and lighting this work for a Showcase production. Students will be required to keep a journal of the creative process and turn this into a faculty mentor in order to receive a grade.

   This course will provide an opportunity for graduate students to practice various stretching techniques taken from exercise science, yoga and pilates and to contribute to the class by sharing current research on flexibility in relation to sports, dance and general well-being.    A costume design and construction practicum course designed to stimulate costuming ideas that correspond to choreographic intentions, using elements of color, texture, form and shape to produce costume renderings that enhance the line and space elements of dance to create a unified gestalt. 7210  Pointe Methodology II (1) Prerequisite: BALLE 7200.
   Second semester of a two-semester sequence with focus on writing a comprehensive paper based on the analysis, development, use, and aesthetics of pointe technique, and how it affects individuals with physiological concerns from intermediate to advanced levels of pointe syllabus covered in Fall semester. Students will be required to design an intermediate and advanced pointe class also integrating musical accompaniment.

7300  Balanchine: Graduate Seminar (3)
   In this graduate seminar, taught by one of Balanchine's leading men, Conrad Ludlow, the students will address the intricacies and the conventions of the Balanchine technique. Aided by the Suki Schorer's definitive book, On Balanchine's Technique, stylistic, technical, and aesthetic issues will be discussed. The context of this course is further personalized by anecdotes and memories of Professor Ludlow.

7310  Reading Dance: Graduate Seminar (3)
   The purpose of this seminar is to introduce graduate students to the seminal literature on dance, along with contemporary critical and scholarly issues as covered in the world's leading dance periodicals. From this exposure, students are expected to identify and appropriate different modes of writing about dance, from newspaper journalism to professional criticism and academia.

7320  Realizing A Concept: Grad Seminar-The Art of Making a Dance (3)
   This graduate seminar will examine creative approach to choreography and realization of ideas by studying selected choreographers, their works, and critical opinions of their works. Different philosophies and influences governing these creative processes will be addressed, discussed, and implemented either through theory or practice.

7330  Language of Gesture in Performance: Graduate Seminar (3)
   The objective of this graduate seminar is to explore the power and inherited significance of Gesture in theatrical traditions throughout the ages. Students will research the significant mime/pantomine artists and companies, both dance and theatre; styles, prevailing themes and practices.

   A study of existing research which pertains to the students scholarly project or thesis.

7810  Ballet History (3)
   An online course covering dance (ballet) history from the early Greek concepts of classicism in art and dance through the evolution of classical ballet to the end of the 20th century. Course will include the study of the arts of painting, drawing, and music as they are related to ballet during each historical period. Students will be required to be online discussion leaders for various gender, social and cultural topics that will arise.

7860  Perspective Character Dance (3)
   Examination of the various types of national, ethnic and folk dances of Europe as they have been adapted to classical ballet performances and other theatrical productions. Additional assignments will be given to graduate students.

7865  Graduate Advance Choreography II (3) Prerequisite: Ballet Major or Departmental permission.
   Course will consist of in-depth research into the choreographic style, structure, content, music, history, time period, national origin, and the social and political influences affecting selected works of choreographers from the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. This will be achieved through discussion, individual student presentations (3), viewing of videotapes, and creative research projects, culminating in completed choreographic works and a research paper.

7870  Pointe Methodology I (1)
   First semester of a two-semester sequence emphasizing analysis of pointe methodology as applied to upper and lower division level instructors. Focus on development, use, and aesthetics of pointe technique, and how it affects dancers in their training. Students will be responsible to observe and keep journals of 10-12 upper and 10-12 lower division pointe classes.

7880  Advanced Conditioning and Research (2)
   An advanced study of current cross-training methods for dancers concentrating on strength building and stretching. Student will be responsible for research and introduction of materials in class.

7890  Graduate: Pas Methodology (2)
   A study and/or practice of various approaches to pas de deux and a detailed examination of the concepts of teaching pas de deux.

7895  Advanced Graduate Methodology/Multi Media (3)
   This course will offer the graduate student an opportunity to work with the latest technologies in music, design, computer graphics, animation, video and stage production, as these technologies relate to the balletic process. Projects are encouraged to be diverse and inventive.

   An in-depth evaluation of performance development and aesthetic vision concentrating on various performing groups in Utah from the youth concerts to the professional performing groups.
