For your convenience, below is a step-by-step process for initial configuration of the Central Directory Service in Netscape 4.7.  To print these instructions, click on the browser Print icon.

Step 1 - Getting Started
The first step in accessing the Central Directory Service is to confirm that the Email function in Netscape is specified. If it is specified, please skip to Step 3 of the instructions. The function is specified if you can successfully send Email messages directly from the browser (as opposed to using an Email program such as, Outlook, Pegasus, or GroupWise).

If the Email function has not been specified check with your network/system administrator or proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 - How to Specify the Email Function
-With the Netscape browser open, click on the Inbox icon in the lower right-hand corner of the browser window, or select Messenger from the Communicator menu
-Go to Edit, Preferences, Mail & Newsgroups, Identity
-Complete the name, email address, and organization fields in the Identity window
-Click OK

Netscape is now specified to send Email messages. This is a one-time process and will not need to be duplicated every time Netscape is opened. However, it may be necessary to repeat Steps 2 and 3 only if the browser on your personal computer is upgraded or there are modifications made to your desktop. Check with your system administrator for details on when this might be necessary.

Go to Step 3.

Step 3 - Initial One-time Configuration of the Central Directory Service
-Open the Address Book from the Communicator menu, or click on the Address Book icon in the lower right-hand corner of the browser screen
-Highlight the Personal Address Book option in the Directory list
-Right click on Personal Address Book
-Select New Directory
-Fill in the following fields under the General tab

Description:   {enter directory name of your choice} U of U/University of Utah/Central Directory Service, etc.
LDAP server:   ldap.acs.utah.edu
Search root:   o=utah.edu (the letter o, not zero)
Port:   389 (default)

Please note, the Central Directory is not secure and does not require a login name or password. The check boxes next to these two options should be left unchecked.

-Click OK
-From the Edit menu select Preferences, Mail & Newsgroups, Addressing
-Place a check in the checkbox next to Directory Server
-Select the name of the server (as determined above) from the dropdown box below Directory Server
-Click OK

Congratulations! You are now ready to move on to Step 4 and access the Central Directory Service.

Step 4 - Conduct a Search using the Central Directory Service
Option 1:
-Open the Messenger window from the Communicator menu, as if to send an Email message
-Click on the New Message icon
-Enter the name of the individual to search. The entry may be a partial first and/or last name, or a full first and/or last name. The names are not case sensitive. As a name is entered in the To field, the Central Directory will automatically search for a match in the database.

If more than one match is found, "Multiple Matches Found" will appear next to the entered text.
-Single click on the bust profile icon to view the list of matches
-To insert the Email address, either double click on the individual's name or highlight the name and click OK
-To view the demographic information, select the name, right click, choose Properties. (Note, this will open a separate browser window.)

If there is only one match, the Email address will appear next to the entered text.
-Press the Tab key to insert the Email address.

Option 2:
-Open the Address Book from the Communicator menu
-From the Directory on the left hand side of the window, highlight the name of the directory from which to search (Central Directory Service server)
-Enter the name of the individual to search in the "Show names containing" field. The entry may be a partial first and/or last name, or a full first and/or last name. The names are not case sensitive. As a name is entered the Central Directory will automatically search for a match in the database

-Double click on the name to display demographic information. (Note, this will open a separate browser window).
-To send an Email message from this screen, close the newly opened window to return to the Address Book, highlight the name, right click and select New Message, or highlight name and clock on the New Message icon

The default fields displayed are name, last name, home phone, home mailing address, work address, department, academic plan (students) object class (student, employee, etc), job title. Note: some fields may be empty, in which case, the data has not been provided.
