Must be enrolled in PCTH 5112. This lab will focus on patient counseling and education. Students will be taught basic information on assessment, patient interviewing skills, and counseling using the top 100 drugs prescribed and the top major drug interactions. Students will be given both simulated and actual experiences to practice and build their skills. Actual experiences will be done at the Senior Centers and community pharmacies. Students will go to the same community pharmacy throughout the semester. Both the lab experiences and the community pharmacy?s experiences will have a variety of assignments.

Students will spend a full day in four different hospital pharmacy organizations and will be responsible for conducting a survey utilizing the attached survey tool from ASHP. Students will be expected to provide a critical evaluation of the organizational structure, operations, education, research and patient care activities of each pharmacy. Students will prepare a detailed report on each pharmacy surveyed and will present their findings to faculty. Students will be able to discuss strengths and weaknesses of each program. Students will also be expected to provide suggestions and a plan for improvement for each organization.

At the end of the course the student should be able to: Identify the necessary pieces of information to analyze a poisoning, describe the services of the Poison Control Center and the role it plays in the practice of pharmacy, understand the principles involved in the general approach to the poisoned patient, describe the toxicology mechanism of action for each of the agents discussed, describe the typical presentation following a poisoning with each specific agent, and outline a specific management plan for each of the agents discussed. This course will integrate knowledge of pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics and therapeutics. This course is intended to provide a foundation for future pharmacists in all practice settings to recognize the toxicological manifestations of unintentional or intentional misuse of drugs, to assess the potential severity of an exposure and to understand the principles involved in the management of a poisoned patient. This course will provide the student with an overview of the clinical manifestations, assessment tools and treatment of common drugs, chemicals and biologic agents.

This course should be particularly helpful for students who anticipate or desire taking professional positions in areas of clinical pharmacy, pharmacy management or administration, or managed care. The course will consist of seminars on various topics that are chosen by students and, when opportunities are available, may provide students with legal experiences such as observing court hearings, depositions, trials, and the like.
7434 Palliative Care: An Interdisciplinary Approach

The course provides students with an interdisciplinary (e.g., medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and ethics) discourse on the provision of pain and symptom control for patients with life limiting disease. The course will focus on attitudes, knowledge, and skills for different providers and on interdisciplinary teaching to navigate the complexities of care required by people facing the end-of-life transition.

This course will introduce pharmacy practice students (P2/P3) and graduate students in the College of Pharmacy to complex bioethics issues. This course will focus on pharmacy related bioethics issues. Students will be instructed in developing skills for bioethics issue identification, logical reasoning and analysis. Issue identification, logical reasoning and analysis skills will enable students to better integrate core principles of ethics, pharmaceutical science and Pharmacotherapy within a balance of legal rules, public policy and societal interests.
7447 Outreach Poison Prevention Education Elective

The primary purpose of the elective is to provide students tools and the experience to provide outreach education programs to a variety of audiences. It is our hope that after graduation, students will continue to provide poison prevention education in the community in which they practice. The Utah Poison Control Center provides outreach poison prevention education to at risk groups in the community. Outreach education efforts are directed to parents of children under six years of age, pre-school students, and older adults. Focus of outreach efforts includes minority groups and other disadvantaged groups. Examples of programs include presentations at Horizonte House, participation in the Junior League Care Fair, JEDI Woman?s group and many other programs.

The purpose of this course is to involve pharmacy students in the improvement of community health through anti-tobacco initiatives as established by the Utah Department of Health, the American Academy of Family Physicians. Third and fourth year students may be allowed to participate upon approval of the course master and/or associate dean for academic.
