Pilates integrates movement and breath to allow for ease of movement around a stable spine. This course will provide an opportunity for students to practice various stretching techniques taken from exercise science, yoga and pilates. Whether the participant wishes to gain flexibility for sports, dance, or general fitness, every level of ability will be accommodated in a casual, supportive environment. Eccentric exercise, sustaining positions, and breathing will be incorporated into sessions with the goal of retaining/improving flexibility as strength.

To develop an appreciation and understanding of the art of pantomime, mime, and classical ballet mime, as they relate to the ballet stage. Students will learn about pantomime/mime through physical exercises, conventional theatrical gestures and poses, improvisations that create real images, movement and dramatic expression, and characterization through scene work. The course will also focus on the history of pantomime/mime from Ancient Greece to Marcel Marceau.

This course aims to make sense of the traditions and conventions of classical ballet by explaining the history of its development and placing it within the broader historical context of Europe's political, socioeconomic, and cultural development. Students will learn the basics of ballet's terminology, meet its eccentric stars, watch some of the jewels of classical repertoire, discover ballet's catchy tunes, learn of conventions of attending a ballet performance today, attend live performance by Utah Ballet and Ballet West, become familiar with basic structures of choreography, enjoy chatting with professional dancers, etc. The course is richly illustrated with recorded material and is equally geared towards dance enthusiasts and utter skeptics.

Students will be required to keep a journal of the creative process and turn this into a faculty mentor in order to receive a grade.
6000 Flexibility and Strength

This course will provide an opportunity for graduate students to practice various stretching techniques taken from exercise science, yoga and pilates and to contribute to the class by sharing current research on flexibility in relation to sports, dance and general well-being. Graduate students will be expected to participate in the class, assist in demonstrations, help the instructor to support safe practices for the students, and research information that will be incorporated into the class.

An online course covering dance (ballet) history from the early Greek concepts of classicism in art and dance through the evolution of classical ballet to the end of the 20th century. Course will include the study of the arts of painting, drawing, and music as they are related to ballet during each historical period. Students will be required to be online discussion leaders for various gender, social and cultural topics that will arise.

Meets with BALLE 4420. This is a studio-based course, designed to train dancers how to work in a cohesive and responsible way as a group. Skills of learning and adapting choreography are developed. Classical, neo-classical, or original choreography (varies each term) may be incorporated for this purpose, thus also serving an additional purpose of familiarizing dancers with repertoire. In addition, graduate students are required to assume the role of a ballet master, researching historical aspects, choreographic differences, staging nuances, and exploring the rehearsal process among other things.

This is a studio-based course, the purpose of which is to introduce students to the classical, i.e. established and accepted worldwide, choreography of character dances (varies each term) in classical ballets, such as Swan Lake, Raymonda, Don Quixote, and Coppelia among others. In addition, graduate students are required to assume the role of ballet master, researching historical aspects, choreographic differences, staging nuances, and exploring the rehearsal process among other responsibilities.

An introduction to LifeForms, a computer compositional tool for the creation of human movement that enables a choreographer to sketch out movement ideas in time and space to stimulate and enhance students' creativity and provide a better understanding of human movement and gesture as they manipulate and visualize the human form on the computer. Students will be given 4 minor creative projects, a major final project and a written analysis of their creative process.

In this graduate seminar, taught by one of Balanchine's leading men, Conrad Ludlow, the students will address the intricacies and the conventions of the Balanchine technique. Aided by the Suki Schorer's definitive book, On Balanchine's Technique, stylistic, technical, and aesthetic issues will be discussed. The context of this course is further personalized by anecdotes and memories of Professor Ludlow.

First semester of a two-semester sequence emphasizing analysis of pointe methodology as applied to upper and lower division level instructors. Focus on development, use, and aesthetics of pointe technique, and how it affects dancers in their training.
