FRNCH Course Descriptions
French Teaching Major and Minor

Adviser. For advising assistance, please call the Department of Languages and Literature at 581-7561.

Majors in French are intended for students wishing to gain a deeper understanding of French and Francophone cultures through the study of language, literature, and society. Majors and minors in language education are also possible. In addition, the French major provides the necessary background for graduate study in languages and comparative literature.

All courses counting toward the major or the minor must be completed with a grade of C or better. Check with the department to see if a transcript is needed. If a course that is a requirement for the major is not available, the department reserves the right to substitute another course to fulfill that requirement.

Students beginning their major (i.e., beginning to take upper-division courses) after Fall 1998 must have a second major, a minor, or must take 16 allied hours, including this additional course: C LIT 3600 What is Literature? (3).

Major. Students must complete 31 credit hours in upper-division courses. For specific requirements, please contact the Department of Languages and Literature.

Minor. Students must complete 15 credit hours in upper-division courses plus FRNCH 3040 or FRNCH 3060. For specific requirements, please contact the Department of Languages and Literature.

Special Opportunities. The department sponsors programs in French-speaking countries (France and Switzerland) for students who desire to participate in an intensive language-learning experience. The department also sponsors a student exchange with the University of Neuchatel. For further details, contact the Study Abroad program office, 159 Olpin Union, 581-5849.
