GERM Course Descriptions
German Teaching Major and Minor

Undergraduate and Graduate Adviser, Wolff von Schmidt, 1321 LNCO, 581-4606

The Department of Languages and Literature offers a major and a minor in German for students wishing to gain a deeper understanding of Germanic cultures through the study of the German language, literature, and society. The German major also provides the necessary background for graduate study.

In addition, the department offers a teaching major and a teaching minor in German for students interested in secondary education teaching. Students seeking teacher certification should also pursue the teaching major or teaching minor. For information on post-bachelor’s dual certification, which enables students to expand the grade levels at which they are qualified to teach in public schools, contact the Education Advising Center for detailed information at 226 MBH, 581-7789.

All courses counting toward the major or the minor must be completed with a grade of C or better. Check with the department to see if a transcript is needed. If a course that is a requirement for the major is not available, the department reserves the right to substitute another course to fulfill that requirement.

Students beginning their major (i.e., beginning to take upper-division courses) after Fall 1998 must have a second major, a minor, or must take 15 allied hours, including this additional course: C LIT 3600 What is Literature? (3).

Major. Students must complete 31 credit hours in upper-division courses. For specific requirements, please contact the Department of Languages and Literature.

Minor. Students must complete 15 credit hours in upper-division courses plus GERM 3040 or GERM 3060. For specific requirements, please contact the Department of Languages and Literature.

Special Opportunities. The department sponsors programs in German-speaking countries for students who desire to participate in an intensive language-learning experience. Contact the Study Abroad Program office for further details at 159 Olpin Union or call 581-5849.
