The College of Education prepares students for positions in public schools, schools of higher learning, and other education-related agencies. It provides a variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, preparing professionals in the following categories: early childhood teachers, elementary and secondary teachers; teachers of exceptional children (mild/moderate disabilities, severe disabilities, early-childhood, hearing impaired and visually impaired education); principals and administrators of elementary and secondary schools; curriculum specialists; pupil personnel specialists, including counselors and school psychologists; and teachers of professional education in institutions of higher learning. 

Teacher education is regarded as a university-wide function and an immediate responsibility of the College of Education. All new or revised teacher licensure or endorsement programs are reviewed by the University Advisory Council on Teacher Education, which has representatives from all colleges involved in preparing professional education personnel. University programs leading to state licensure and endorsement are approved by the Utah State Board of Education. 

Utah State Office of Education (USOE) Requirements

Utah law (UCA 53A-3-410) requires University students to receive background checks and fingerprinting clearance prior to having significant unsupervised access to children in school settings.  Students should contact the department from which they are earning their education license to obtain information about when and how to obtain background and fingerprinting clearance. 

State and Federal Teacher Testing Requirement

The federal government, under Title II of the Higher Education Act (2000), is requiring all states to report teacher candidate performance on standardized test measures.  To comply with this requirement, the Utah State Office of Education is requiring all state teacher education candidates to take the Praxis II - Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test.  Specifically, upon successful completion of a student's pre-service teacher preparation program, the preparing institution will recommend the student for Level 1 teaching license which is valid for three years.  Teacher candidates are then required to take the Praxis II PLT test within one year after completing their pre-service preparation program.  Teacher education students graduating after January 1, 2002, are required to take the test in order to establish state norms and a state "cut-off score" for acceptable performance.  Teacher education students graduating after January 1, 2003, must take and pass the exam in order to become eligible to advance to a Level 2 teaching license. 

Financial Assistance

Undergraduate. The College of Education offers departmental, mathematics/science/foreign language, Terrell H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan, and other scholarships. Application forms and detailed information regarding scholarships are available from the various departments within the college. 

Graduate. Graduate fellowships and assistantships are often available through the College of Education. Students should contact the chair of the department in which they will do graduate work for details about qualifications and stipends.
