The course explores ways of experiencing and understanding the elements
of architecture and concepts about structures, space, and form which create
buildings. It centers on critical and creative interpretation in the attempt
to understand the connection between form and content, image and meaning.

Culture of Architecture (3) Fulfills Fine Arts or Humanities
Exploration.
The course considers architecture in the context of community, as an
inextricable part of a pattern of interactions and instuitutions that play
out on the land. It encourages critical understanding of the relationship
between form, space, and idea. Particular attention is paid to architectural
theory, the interplay between treatises, and actual buildings and city form.

the students in this experimental course will create written and visual
demonstrations aimed at exploring the territory of communication between

elements of architecture, such as methodologies, place making, techtonics

Typology (1.5) Prerequisite: Admission to a Graduate Program in the
Graduate School of Architecture.
Examination and analysis of a particular building typology from a
structural perspective. Small scale, long span, towers, and mid-scale
buildings are regularly considered on a rotating basis. Use of computer
analytic tools to achieve understanding of the structural behavior of a
particular typology is included.
6303 Advanced Structural Theory (1.5)
Prerequisite: Admission to a Graduate Program in the Graduate School of
Architecture.
The course focuses on higher level structural theory. It examines either
an investigation of indeterminate structural systems or numeric analytic
techniques as the mathematical basis of computer structural programs.

technical aspects of environmental resource consumption and analysis methods
needed to predict energy consumption and comfort for the design of a new or
adaptively reused building.
