GERMAN TEACHING MAJOR

I. Core Requirements

  GERM 3040 Topics in Literature And Culture     3* 

  OR GERM 3060 Grammar and Reading    3** 

GERM 3550 Cultural History    3 

GERM 4600 Literature and the History of Ideas    3 

GERM 4990 Capstone Course    1 

LANG 5410 L2 Methodology: K-12    3 

LING 1200 Introduction to the Study of 
Language     3 

Note: Students beginning their major (i.e., beginning to take upper-division courses) after Autumn 1989 must have a second major, a minor, or must take 16 allied hours, including this additional course: C LIT 3600 What is Literature? (3).

II. Electives

Additional upper-division elective hours (necessary to complete the required 31 credit hours) including: 3000-or 4000-level courses; or graduate-level German courses (5000-level or above) upon approval—before taking the course—by the course instructor and departmental undergraduate adviser; and/or courses on the following list: GERM 3540, 3900, 3920, 3950, 4510, 4520, 4540, 4610, 4620, 4630, 4880, 4900. 


*For students who have learned the language through lower-division undergraduate courses or who have tested out of such courses by taking the placement exam. 

**For students who have learned the language intensively for approximately 1.5 years in a non-academic setting, i.e., in a German-speaking country. 

III. Certification Course Work

Students must complete pre-cohort and cohort education course work listed under Secondary Education

GERMAN TEACHING MINOR

I. Core Requirements

  GERM 3040 Topics in Literature and Culture     3*

II. Electives

Additional upper-division elective hours (necessary to complete the required 18 credit hours) including 3000- or 4000-level courses; or graduate-level German courses (5000-level or above) upon approval—before taking the course—by the course instructor and departmental undergraduate adviser; and/or courses on the following list: GERM  3540, 3550, 3900, 3920, 3950, 4510, 4520, 4540, 4600, 4610, 4620, 4630, 4900.
