Undergraduate Program

Degree. B.A. 

Adviser. Professor Wesley Sasaki-Uemura, 301 Carlson Hall, 581-6121. No student is enrolled as a history major or minor until he or she has met with the History Department's director of undergraduate studies. Students should see their adviser at the beginning of each semester. 

History is a record of the political, social, economic, and cultural events, lives, and achievements of mankind. Historians analyze and evaluate this record in an attempt to understand the past and interpret the present. The History Department offers comprehensiveness and breadth in the undergraduate program as well as possibilities for research specialization on the master's and doctoral levels. History majors and minors are required to prepare their course of study with the approval of a departmental adviser, preferably at the start of each term and especially the term the student receives the Graduation Summary Report from the Registrar's Office. 

Scholarships. The History Department annually offers tuition waiver scholarships for continuing and entering students. The deadline for submission for all scholarship materials is February 15. Applications are available in the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, 105 SSB. Turn in all application materials to the Department of History office, 211 Carlson Hall.

HIST 2710 US History Since 1877 (3)

HIST 1010 Western Civilization to 1300 (3)

³ The department grants the Bachelor of Science degree only by petition, and majors are normally expected to take the four semesters of a foreign language to fulfill the Bachelor of Arts requirement.

Master's Degree. Those who hold a B.A. or B.S. from an accredited college or university and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above are eligible for admission to the Master's Program.  In addition to the graduate school application forms, all applicants must submit a verbal GRE score above the 55th percentile, Statement of Purpose, Statement of Academic Preparation & Honors and three letters of recommendation.  If you would like a complete application packet for admission to the Master's program, please send a request to Carrie.Baird@mail.hum.utah.edu.  The deadline for all application materials is February 1st.  See the departmental Graduate Handbook for a detailed description of the program or go to http://www.hum.utah.edu/history/Graduate_Program/.

Ph.D. Degree.
