1220  First-Year Acting for Actor Training Program (3) 
   Introduces the student to element of acting through use of self as a basis for investigation and discovery. It begins the process of transferring self to creating a character, through the use of exercises, monologues and/or scene study. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

1230  First-Year Acting for Actor Training Program (3) Prerequisite: THEAT 1220. 
   Continues the exploration of creating character and begins the exploration of character actions and interaction, through the use of exercises, monologues, scenes and/or performance projects. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

1240  First-Year Voice for Actor Training Program (2) 
   This course begins the exploration of voice and movement for the actor. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

1550  Scenography (3) 
   An introduction to the art of scenography, including the ways in whcih theatre artists communicate visually, and the way audiences 'read' information in a theatrical design.. Theatre Core Requirement class.

1580  Introduction to Theatre for Theatre Majors (3) 
   In-depth study of major plays in the history of theatre. For entering theatre majors. Theatre Core Requirement Class.

1740  History and Analysis of Musical Theatre (3) Fulfills Fine Arts Foundation.
   An overview of the history, basic forms, and styles of musical theatre. Direct participation in some of the forms of theatrical presentation.

1760  American Political Theatre (3) Fulfills Diversity, Fine Arts Foundation.
   Taught as Writing Emphasis For explanation, see Writing Program in the Courses section of this catalog. Fifty years of American political theatre; The Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, Civil Rights, Vietnam, and the Me generation. Students get a unique inside look at the impact of American politics on everyday life.

1770  The American Experience Through Black Theatre (3) Fulfills Diversity, Fine Arts Foundation.
   Taught as Writing Emphasis. For explanation, see Writing Program in the Courses section of this catalog. A study of contemporary drama written by African-Americans. Authors such as James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Leroi Jones, and others explore various American institutions (church, marriage, home, school, and job) from an African-American perspective. Students experience both product and process through reading and discussing finest African- American theatre.

2010  Second-Year Singing for Actor Training Program (1) 
   Covers an introduction to the genre of Musical Theater. Basic elements of music are presented to enable the student to read and evaluate written music. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program.

2020  Second-Year Singing for Actor Training Program (1) Prerequisite: THEAT 2010. 
   Presents basic elements of the physiology of the voice and singing technique. It investigates the student's voice through individual and ensemble work. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program.

2030  Third-Year Singing for Actor Training Program (1) Prerequisite: THEAT 2020. 
   Continues the exploration of singing techinque through the building of individual repertoire. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program.

2040  Third-Year Singing for Actor Training Program (1) Prerequisite: THEAT 2030. 
   This course continues the exploration of singing technique through the building of individual repertoire. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program.

2050  Alexander Technique (2) 
   Students will learn about habitual patterns of thought and movement. This will increase you ability to use yourself with greater ease and efficiency. Alexander Technique also offers tools to those suffering from anziety, depression, chronic pain, and neck, back, and hip disorders.

2110  Scene Design I (3) Prerequisite: THEAT 1550. 
   Various lectures and projects exploring modern stage design. Drawing, sketching, and model work.

   Costume design and rendering techniques.

   Begins an extended exploration of voice and speech for the actor, including: release, grounding of the breath, alignment, release of sound, vibrations, range, speech sounds, imagery, and text. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

3020  Second-Year Voice and Speech for Actor Training Program (3) Prerequisite: THEAT 3010. 
   Continues the extended exploration of voice and speech for the actor, including: release, grounding of the breath, alignment, release of sound, vibrations, range, speech sounds, imagery and text. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

3040  Introduction to Voice and Speech (3) 
   This course is designed for students who wish to improve voice and speech skills, in the interest of clear and effective communication. Basic elements are introduced and explored experientially, including: body release, grounding of the breath, alignment, vibrations, release of sound resonance, projection, range, rhythm, pacing, vocal exploration, speech sounds, imagery and text. Practical application of voice and speech is achieved through individual projects.

3210  Tai-Chi Yoga Movement (3) 
   Tai-Chi Yoga incorporates the dance forms, martial applications, and energy work of Tai Chi, with the exercise, breathing, and meditation of Yoga.

3240  Second-Year Movement for Actor Training Program (3) Prerequisite: THEAT 1240. 
   Begins a progression of movement awareness and skills for the actor. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

   Basic sound design and engineering for the theatre.

3715  Fine Arts Teaching Methods (2) 
   Assists Elementary Education majors in becoming familiar and conversant with methods for integrating theatre into the elementary school curriculum. It is a hands-on methods course designed to give pre-service teachers confidence and direction in the planning and perfomance of theatre work. Students will design and implement theatre lessons and experiences, as well as create and perform original pieces that could be produced with and for elementary school learners. Must also enroll for DANCE 3715.

   Students will be provided with opportunities to get together to conduct program business and to share/demonstrate program concerns and issues, new research in teacher education, new teaching methods, personal learning and teaching experiences, etc.

3820  Theatre Teaching Practicum (0.5) 
   Students will be provided with opportunities to teach theatre hands-on with age appropriate students with and under the supervision of the course instructor.

   Introduction to creative and administrative work of a stage manager. Meets with THEAT 5880.

It begins an extended exploration of speech for the actor, through learning specific placement of sound, all in the interest of speech possiblities and clear communication. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

5080  Third-Year Voice and Speech for Actor Training Program (3) Prerequisite: THEAT 5070. 
   Continues the exploration of voice for the actor, focusing on individual need, extending vocal possibilities, agility, strength, and stamina. It continues an extended exploration of speech for the actor, through learning specific placement of sound, all in the interest of speech possibilities and clear communication. Work is summarized in the presentation of monologues and/or scenes in Stage Standard dialect. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

   Continues the exploration of specific skills of voice and speech for the actor. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

5110  Beginning Stage Directing (3) 
   Analysis of play structure. Fundamentals of play directing.

   Analysis of the necessary arts of communication between director and designer. Discussion of directorial concepts in visual terms. Meets with THEAT 6120.

   Advanced Actiing Studio concentrating on scene work. The focus is an in-depth study into realism for the Actor Training Program.

   Begins an extended study of elements of verse and the use of language in verse drama, through the use of exercises, monologues and scenes, primarily from Shakespeare's texts. Acceptance into the Actor Training Program required.

   Students will learn and demonstrate specific teaching methods for teaching theater in the elementary grades, including how to teach the Theatre Core Curriculum mandated by the Utah State Office of Education.

5610  Teaching Theatre in Secondary Schools (3) 
   Students will learn and demonstrate specific teaching methods for teaching theater in the secondary schools including how to teach the Theatre Core Curriculum mandated by the Utah State Office of Education.

5620  Young People's Theatre (2) 
   Students will study Young Peoples Theatre (YPT) history, read contemporary YPT plays, explore experimental forms, and apply YPT directing methods; and complete a practicum in YPT in one or more of the following disciplines: playwriting, acting, directing, or production.

5630  Drama as Service-Learning (3) 
   Students will learn and demonstrate specific teaching methods for applying theater to service-learning situations outside the theater classroom or discipline, e.g. drama/theatre-in-education, social-issue-focused-theatre (SIFT) projects, special populations, crisis prevention, drama therapy, etc. This course will be a service-learning scholar course and co-listed with the Bennion Center.

5640  Musical Theatre Directing (2) 
   Students will learn and demonstrate the fundamentals of directing musical theatre in the elementary and secondary schools, including beginning music theory, romance technique, beginning choreography, analysis of a musical theatre work, etc.

   Instruction is designed to prepare the beginning teacher to teach acting to secondary students by observation of an experienced acting teacher.

   For students who will be writing a thesis as part of their degree work, this class will go over the fine points of scholarly writing.

   Essentials of lighting design process with emphasis on elements of design, composition, design styles, script analysis. Meets with THEAT 2170.

6120  Research and Collaboration (3) Prerequisite: Graduate standing required. 
   Analysis of the necessary art of communication between director and designer. Discussion of directorial concepts in visual terms. Meets with THEAT 5120.

   Performance students will continue to improve through exercise and practice of their skills on stage.

   Further development of performance students' abilities in their chosen area of expertise.

6170  Directorial Concept (2 to 3) 
   Introduction to creating a directorial concept and how it affects the work of a director on a play.

6180  Directing Technique (3) 
   The course examines techniques involved in directing a stage production. Among the issues addressed are casting, staging, stage composition, beat breakdown, ground plans, and rehearsal organization. The class consists of lectures and discussions centered on the study of a particular single script.

6200  Directing Verse Drama (3) 
   Offers directors the opportunity to analyze and prepare verse scenes, to work with actors on those scenes, and to work with the instructor on directing a workshop production of a play in verse.

6210  Advanced Directing (3) Prerequisite: Graduate standing required. 
   Re-examines such subjects as staging and picturization and scrutinizes them in greater detail as they pertain to the production work at hand.

6220  New Play Workshop (3) 
   Students explore the collaborative processes which bring a new script from the page to production.

6240  Artistic Direction (3) 
   Examination of the work and role of the artistic directors in the American Theatre.

6290  MFA Project (1 to 2) 
   The course consists of directing a fully staged and designed production of a play and documenting it through a paper, which describes the director's process.

6420  Playwriting (4) 
   Beginning writing of one-act and full-length plays.

6500  Sound for Directors (5) 

6750  Studies in Theatre History (3) Prerequisite: Graduate standing required. 
   Examinations of significant past theater groups, movement, periods, etc.

   Examinations of a significant writer or writers, prevailing themes, ethnic or gender-based literature, etc.

6770  Current Trends in Theatre (3) Prerequisite: Graduate standing required. 
   Examination of a recent theatrical developement in production or text.

   Students study, discuss, report, and research in written form the history of stage direction from the emergence of the stage director in the late 19th-century through the present.
