Undergraduate Program

The Department of Educational Studies offers a bachelor's level program in elementary education as well as course work for certification of early childhood education and secondary teachers. State-approved programs in early childhood, elementary, and secondary teacher education prepare students to teach grades kindergarten through 12. The Utah State Office of Education grants teaching certificates.
Students who are interested in teaching should contact the Education Advising Center, 226 Milton Bennion Hall, for current information on program requirements; formal application to a teacher education program is required. See also Education in the Colleges section of this catalog.

Admission to Teacher Education Programs.
Students pursuing teacher education must make formal application to the early childhood, elementary, or secondary teacher certification programs. Applications for admission are due February 1 for early childhood and secondary education. Applications for admission to the elementary program are due May 20.

Degrees.
B.A., B.S. in elementary education.

Elementary Education.
The professional program in teacher education includes academic and methods courses, supervised student teaching in public school classrooms, and practical experience in innovative, experimental teaching situations.

Secondary Education.
Degrees in secondary education are granted through the particular college of the student's teaching major. For information about available majors and minors as well as curriculum and certification information, see Education in the Colleges section of this catalog.

Admission to Early Childhood Education Program.
The Department of Educational Studies together with the Department of Family and Consumer Studies offers a state-approved post baccalaureate certification program in early childhood teacher education. Successful completion of the program leads to recommendation for K-3 certification. The Utah State Office of Education grants teaching certificates. Early childhood and secondary certification may be pursued at the post-baccalaureate and graduate levels. Graduate status must be obtained through separate application (see Department of Educational Studies for more information).

Degrees.
M.A., M.S., M.Ed., Ph.D. For additional information, see the Graduate Information section of this catalog.

Areas of Specialization.
M.Ed. programs include specializations in critical, cultural, and curriculum studies; learning and instruction; and teaching and teacher education. M.A./M.S. programs allow greater flexibility to meet individual student interests and needs. Ph.D. programs can be constructed in a variety of subspecialties.

M.A./M.S. Degree.
Students must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours of course work, including a 6-hour core, 15 hours of appropriate courses consistent with student goals, and 9 hours in thesis and research design.

M.Ed. Degree.
Students must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours, including 6 hours in prescribed core courses, and at least 15 hours in a specialty area (see above).

Ph.D. Degree.
Students must complete core courses and both preliminary and qualifying examinations. The remainder of the program is planned individually with the supervisory committee, including substantial work outside the Graduate School of Education, a focus on a subspecialty inside the department, and a dissertation.

Admission Requirements.
Candidates for all master's degrees must meet the Graduate School requirements, hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, and earn acceptable scores on the GRE or MAT. Candidates for the Ph.D. must have an acceptable master's degree, meet departmental minimums in graduate work, and have acceptable GPA and GRE scores. Applicants must provide letters of recommendation and a personal statement to the graduate programs committee.
