Undergraduate Program

Degree.
B.A. (Bachelor of Arts)

Art History Major.
This course of study is designed to teach undergraduate students how to develop historically informed approaches to art within the broader framework of an interdisciplinary humanities education. Specific requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in art history are 39 semester hours of courses in the major, including ART H 2500, a foreign language, 18 upper-division hours in a related field (German and French are recommended), ART H 5850, and a senior paper.

The remaining 13 hours for minimum graduation requirements for the B.A. degree may be filled at the student's discretion. No grade below C will be counted toward fulfilling requirements for the major.

Upon declaration of the major, the student must make an appointment with the art history undergraduate adviser. Art history majors should complete their program with at least four courses at the 3000 level, seven courses at the 4000 and 5000 level, and Art History 5850. In the senior year, the student must consult with a faculty adviser to select a topic for the senior paper required for graduation.

Art History Minor.
Students declaring a minor in art history must consult with the art history undergraduate adviser. Requirements for a minor in art history include a minimum of 28 semester hours in art history, ART H 2500, and six upper-division courses (three courses at the 3000 level and three courses at the 4000 level).

Students should consult Art History course descriptions in this catalog when choosing their combination of upper-division courses.

No grade below C will be counted toward fulfilling the requirements of the minor.

CR/NC grading option is not available for art history minors when enrolled in Art History courses. There is no foreign language requirement for an art history minor although most students completing requirements for a B.A. degree in another major will fill the language requirement.

Graduate Program

Degree.
M.A. in Art History.
Director of Graduate Studies, Professor M.F. Francey, 156 ART
The Art History Program admits qualified students holding a B.A. degree into its M.A. program.

The course of study leading to the M.A. in Art History is designed to enable students to attain competence in a selected area of study and to provide them with training in art historical research methods.

The M.A. degree is preparatory for doctoral study for those students who intend to teach at the higher education level, and offers an appropriate education for students who wish to work in art museums, libraries, and art galleries.

Required for completion of the degree are 30 hours of courses in Art History and related fields at the 5000 level and above, including six seminar hours, nine hours in a selected area of study, and at least one course at the 6000 level in the areas of Asian Art, Ancient and Medieval Art, Renaissance and Baroque Art, Nineteenth Century Art, and Modern and Contemporary Art.

No later than the third semester of graduate work, the student forms a supervisory committee to advise in a selected area of study. Preparatory to advancement to candidacy, the student must achieve a satisfactory grade on examinations administered by the supervisory committee. Following admission to candidacy, the supervisory committee works with the student to direct research and writing of the master's thesis, and submits a written proposal to the committee's chair. Upon approval of the proposal, the student writes a thesis that demonstrates ability to conduct independent research and make a contribution to knowledge in a specialized area of study.

Application to the Art History M.A. Program is made directly to The Graduate School, Admissions Office, 250 Student Services Building, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112. This office supplies applicants with all appropriate forms and the bulletin of The Graduate School. In addition, students should send the following directly to the Art History Program Director:

    3. A one-page statement of objectives outlining the applicant's academic goals.
