Students continue in the program after successful completion of the foundation requirements and a screening by the Faculty Review Committee. Transfer art studio majors are required to submit a portfolio and transcripts to the department for probationary placement. Contact the department for portfolio submission dates for each semester. The art department will not be responsible for portfolios left in the department after two weeks from notification of results. A minimum of 40 credit hours taken within the department is required of all transfer students. Transfer students interested in the Graphic Design and Illustration programs are required to submit a portfolio, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation towards the end of Spring Semester. Call the department for submission deadline. High school seniors who wish to be considered for freshman scholarship assistance must participate in either the annual Springville Museum of Art high school scholarship review or the March department portfolio review. Contact the department for review dates.

Special Requirements. Students planning to major in art should
contact the department adviser prior to the beginning of their freshman year to secure an outline of the semester to semester sequence in which art classes are required. To be eligible to use the old quarter-system requirements, students must have completed 45 or more quarter credit hours at the University of Utah prior to Fall Semester 1998, 27 of those hours being the art foundation program.

All art majors are eligible to participate in the annual student exhibit and competition. Student work selected for the exhibition may be retained by the department for up to one year.

Work of D+ or lower is not acceptable for fulfilling art-major requirements.

A total of 6 to 12 art history hours, depending on selected emphasis, is required of all studio majors.

Emphases. In addition to the foundation curriculum, the candidate completes the requirements in an individual area of emphasis: painting/drawing, ceramics, intermedia sculpture, illustration, graphic design, printmaking, photography, or art teaching.

Film production courses are offered through the Film Studies Program.

Teaching Program. Students who plan to teach art in the secondary schools complete the B.F.A. degree, following the teaching emphasis outline. Candidates must maintain a 3.0 GPA in art major classes to remain in the emphasis.

Transfer students who wish to enroll in the teaching program are required to submit a portfolio for review.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
A portfolio review is held annually in March for all Art Department scholarships. The department offers one-year full tuition scholarships to Utah high school students who plan to become art majors. For students currently enrolled in the department, one-year continuing scholarships are available. Students may qualify for Universitywide scholarships and financial aid as well. Graduate Programs
There are two degrees offered by the Department of Art: the M.A. in Art History and the M.F.A. in Art.

Degree. M.A. in Art History. See Art History Program.

Degree. M.F.A.
Application should be made directly to the Admissions Office, 250 Student Services Building. The Department of Art makes recommendations regarding acceptance. For additional information, see also the Graduate Information section of this catalog.

Areas of specialization in the M.F.A. program include painting and drawing, printmaking, graphic design, illustration, sculpture, film production, ceramics, and photography. Film production courses are offered through the Film Studies Program.

Admission Requirements. These include a B.F.A. degree or degree with equivalent studio art background, which normally includes a minimum of 41 credit hours of studio art and 12 hours of art history courses. Also required is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for the last two years of undergraduate degree credit attempted or 3.0 in the major. Applicants must submit a portfolio of approximately twenty 35-mm slides reflecting a self-directed involvement in the intended major emphasis, three letters of reference, and a written statement outlining reasons for applying. A personal interview is arranged whenever possible. International students are required to have a TOEFL score of 575 or better.

Admission inquiries should be directed to the Director of Graduate Studies, University of Utah Department of Art, 375 S. 1530 E. Rm 161, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112-0380. All materials must be received by February 1 for consideration by the graduate admissions committee for Fall Semester admission. The selection committee meets during the first week in March. Prospective students must also make formal application to the Graduate School.

Degree Requirements. Admission to matriculation in the M.F.A. degree program is conditional; the first semester is considered to be probationary. Students must be recommended for candidacy by their graduate committee after completion of a minimum of four hours in the area of specialization and prior to completion of the first year of the two-year residency requirement. The probationary review is normally held at the end of the first semester of residency. It is expected that the M.F.A. degree student perform at letter grade B or higher. The letter grade C is not acceptable toward completion of the 60-hour minimum degree requirement, and an accumulation of six hours of C work may result in dismissal from the program.

Each student's course of study must be approved by the supervisory committee, the department chair, and the dean of the college. Students are encouraged to pursue a course of study that utilizes the potential of the total University. A minimum of nine hours of graduate-level art history and six hours of M.F.A. seminar are required of each candidate. M.F.A. candidates are expected to maintain continuous registration during their graduate program. Interruption of studies requires readmission into the program. The degree must be completed within four years.

An M.F.A. exhibition and thesis are required for fulfillment of the M.F.A. degree.
